Buying Used Furniture in NYC

Furnishing a brand new apartment is the probably the only fun part of moving. However it can get very expensive even going the IKEA way. Many people turn to craigslist to find used furniture, but are quickly deterred by the thought of duh duh DUH-bed bugs!

Here is my money saver tip to those who want lightly used furniture:

  1. Search on craigslist for used furniture in the wealthy parts of the suburbs-ie:
  • Greenwich CT
  • Stamford CT
  • Westchester NY
  • Long Island NY
  • parts of NJ, etc.
  1. Search for high end furniture companies like:
  • West Elm
  • Restoration Hardware
  • Pottery Barn
  • Crate and Barrel
  • Pier One
  1. Stay away from:
  • Mattresses
  • Rugs
  • Curtains
  1. Do buy:
  • Coffee tables
  • End tables
  • Dressers
  • Mirrors and other accessories
  • Desk
  • Bookshelves
  • Lamps
  • Kitchen supplies
  • Couches-if lightly used

If you don’t have a car, rent a one bedroom uhaul (around $150/day) and plan on picking up all your goods! Also, always NEGOTIATE! You can probably knock it down a few more bucks if you pay in cash!
