Now that you know how much money you can afford to spend on an apartment and you know where you want to live, it’s time to find the perfect roommates! Either way if you don’t already know friends, you’ll need to find a roommate. The more roommates you have, the more you will save on rent. Here are some conversations to consider having when meeting a potential roommate:
- Are you an early bird or a night owl?
If you like to sleep in, try and find roommates who also share your interests and won’t be making smoothies at 6am. If you’re all about working out and eating a healthy breakfast before work, finding roommates who follow this game plan as well, will make life much easier.
- Smoking or Non Smoking
While many landlords, supers, and apartment buildings will restrict smoking within the apartment, people tend to disregard and follow their own personal preference. In light of this knowledge, make sure to discuss your smoking preferences, whatever they may be.
- Dietary Preferences
If you are vegan to the core, you might not want to live with someone throwing down an $80 cut of beef for a Friday night dinner. If you’re a peanut lover of all forms, and your future roomie is deathly allergic, you might not want to share a kitchen together. No matter what your preferences or allergies are, make sure to discuss this with any future roommate.
- Clealiness
Whether you clean your dishes immediately after cooking or wait three weeks until the mold builds up, it might be worth discussing cleaning habits with your future roomies. The last thing you want is to be cleaning for four people who never clean.
- Sexual Preference
Awkward. SO very awkward. And while it’s awkward, sexual preference is a good conversation to get out of the way early on. Whether you talk about your personal preferences, ongoing relationship, or your casual encounters you tend to have, figuring out the delicate details is an important factor in a roommate-ship.
- Introvert or Extrovert
Some people like to read books till 5am, while others want to party like Stevie Nicks and eat za drunk with a party of peeps all night. Discussing socializing preferences with future roommates will solve plenty of fights later on.
- Nosiness
If you do prefer to party like it’s 1999, make sure you are realistic about how noisy you can be. Just because every night is a party night for you, doesn’t mean your three roommates want to sing the oldies and reminiscence on high school memories.
